EL ARISH
This charming town, named after an Egyptian battle site and established under the Returned Soldier Settlement Act, has a captivating blend of World War I heritage and idyllic countryside. During the war, El Arish in Egypt played a pivotal role as a base for the courageous ANZAC soldiers. Soldiers from all over the country who returned from both world wars were entitled to enter a ballot for blocks of land that were earmarked for sugarcane farming and El Arish in Queensland was born. The echoes of their valour still resonates through the town, with the meticulously preserved El Arish Diggers Museum, the RSL Memorial Hall, and local monuments, poignant reminders of the soldiers’ sacrifice.
